Manchester United – the early days – 1892 signed card

5 Mar

This is a card signed by the players of Newton Heath football club in 1892. The club which would later become the world famous Manchester United.

The card is also signed by the players of Bolton Wanderers, one of the founding members of the Football League, which was formed in 1888 with Newton Heath joining in 1892.

The card was signed as a memento of the Manchester Senior Cup final held on 15th April, 1892 at the then homeground of United’s great rivals, Manchester City, at their Ardwick Ground on Hyde Road in North Manchester.

The signatures legible are as follows: Newton Heath players Clemence, Hood, Errantz, Farman, Fitzsimmons, and Cassidy. Bolton players including Sutcliffe and Somerville.

The Manchester Football Association Senior Cup was first played in 1885 and featured the major professional clubs within the Manchester area, with Newton Heath getting to the first final only to be beaten by Hurst who later became Ashton United Football Club. They would however go on to win the competition the following year and a further 3 times up to 1893.
