The Derby Inn – 935 Rochdale Rd – M9 8AE – Higher Blackley

23 Aug

The Derby Arms in 1968 – taken from Moston Lane.

The Derby Inn is on the corner of Rochdale Road and Factory Lane in Blackley and on the boarder of Harpurhey and straight opposite the Golden Tavern Public House which is at 933 Rochdale Road.

It is commonly known as The Top Derby, but it is not known when this name change occurred.

This area was known as Barnes Green, but the name has fallen into disuse and been renamed Harpurhey. Any idea why?

Hi John. Very nice to hear from you. This is very interesting and will have to do a little digging around. I’ve heard of Barnes Green in London, but not Harpurhey. Will see if I can find out more.

I was a bit inaccurate; the area north of Moston Lane/Factory Lane is Blackley, the area south is Harpurhey. However, the land north of Factory Lane and east of Rochdale Road was called Barnes Green as shown on the 1915 OS Map. In fact one of my ancestors lived there and it was marked on the 1841 census as such, with no street name.

There’s a catholic social club and the local post office with the same name, but aside from that it seems to have slipped off the map.
